Nutritional ketosis is the state in which our body switches into fat burning mode. By decreasing carbohydrate intake, consuming only moderate amounts of protein and increasing high quality, good fats like MCT oil, coconut oil, avocados, pastured butter, cultured ghee, eggs, nuts, etc., the high fat content keeps you amazingly full and allows the body to convert to a fat burning state.
This theory can seem counterintuitive to some, and certainly counters what has been promoted by the Food Pyramid Guidelines. However, an ever-growing body of evidence shows that the reduction of fat in our diets since the 1970’s has only accelerated the obesity epidemic as fats were replaced with carbohydrates. The science supports nutritional ketosis for weight management as well as cancer therapies.
Also important to know is that a low carbohydrate, high protein diet often miss the mark as the body, in the absence of carbohydrates, naturally converts protein into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. So, finding that right ratio of carbs:protein:fats for your body is critical in achieving nutritional ketosis. At IHH, we often encourage home monitoring of urine, blood or breath ketone to ensure that you are indeed in a state of nutritional ketosis.
